Cheryl's Makeover - Theory and Planning

I knew the instant I started talking to Cheryl what I wanted to do with her hair- at least in a general way. Cheryl is the Mom of 3 young boys. One of the first things out of her mouth was that fact. She is busy; all day, every day. As you can see in the before picture, she has lots of hair. That was problem one. You can also see that she does not have much time to spend on herself, thus long hair, easily grabbed and pulled back. Cheryl's hair style had evolved as a response to her lifestyle. It was not an expression of who she is but more a default result from what she does.

The very first thing I had to deliver was a style that would be as easy to manage as her default "leave long and pull back" style. Cheryl's hair texture when left to dry on its own was frizzy, fuzzy with uneven curl and wave. Left long, she was able to style it quickly by pulling as she dried with a flat brush; but it never really looked styled, just smaller and less fuzzy. One of our stylists, Julie Moore, performed our Keratin Smoothing Process on Cheryl's hair. We jokingly call this service the anti-perm amongst ourselves at Noland Suttles. This was just what Cheryl needed to give HER control of her hair. We had to make styling her hair easier, not harder because this was the critical criteria given the demands her life currently makes on her time.

Beauty Boot Camp

Starting today, I will be adding some of my work on the Beauty Boot Camp Blog here into my own personal blog.

In case you don't know, in January I partnered with Institut' DERMed and Gym of Buckhead. Together we launched the first ever (as far as we know) joint collaboration between a hair salon, medispa and gym. Our mission was to see if we could help regular people to acheive extraordinary results in all three arenas of their personal life: hair, skin and health/fitness. We advertised our concept locally and had over 300 registrations. On February 14, we hosted a launch kickoff party. We had over 150, almost 200, people arrive to be interviewed as candidates to be selected. We only slected five! It was very difficult.

We then proceeded to put our five candidates through our 8 week course named My Beauty Boot Camp. In case you have been wondering where I have been these last 10-12 weeks... that is where. Jezzebel Photo Shoot with Sciascia

I can't show you any of the photo shoot yet because it hasn't gone to print, but last week Lisa Sciascia was in from New York to do the next fashion editorial for Jezebel Magazine. Claire Fricke with Click-New York Pro was the model and she was just fantastic. The entire shoot was just tremendous. I can't wait to see it in print.

We shot on location way out in Crabapple, we started at 7:00 AM which meant we left Atlanta at 6! The drive was worth every minute though. Victoria really had some great locations scouted out and the clothes were perfect. I wish I could put some of the images up today. Keep an eye peeled for the next issue of Jezebel; I believe it will be in that issue.

And, FYI.... the latest Atlantan Magazine came out today and I used an image from a shoot a while back. It always amazes me how perception changes. When I am shooting photography for photography's sake (not just hair and fashion) I am almost always disappointed with the majority of the images, mainly because my mental perceptions and expectations of each image always seems to be better than the actual image. I generally won't even look at them until 6 months have passed so I can see them in an objective way.

The image I used in the Atlantan this month is a perfect example of this phenomenon. Both Lisa and I went through the images right after shooting, and BOTH of us overlooked it. Looking at it later with fresh eyes, I now think it is my favorite of the entire shoot. Go figure..

P.S. Sometime in the next week or so I will post a photo story about how I got the soft curl into Jessica's hair. She has natural, fine, stick straight hair and using this technique will give you NATURAL looking curl, all day.
